HAYNE’s Chatbot ‘highly commended’ at recent IBM Watson hackathon

HAYNE’s very own ‘hacker at heart’ Gareth Walters, Development Engineer, attended the IBM Watson Business Partner hackathon from 19 – 20 June 2017.

The event was focused around IBM’s new ‘Watson’ AI platform for business.

What is IBM Watson?

The platform is based on ‘machine learning algorithms’, which is a subset of AI. Watson provides businesses with the ability to make decisions based on predictions, meet demanding customer service requirements plus many more opportunities for growth and improved efficiencies.

Gareth was part of “Team Agi”, which included a marketing executive and analytics consultant from Presidion, an analytics and insights solutions organisation. Together, they built a health and wellness chatbot prototype which is intended to help people who feel isolated or sad. It works by suggesting services that may help the user based on what they tell Watson.

Gareth commented, “The IBM Watson Business Partner Hackathon was great. I learnt a lot from the experience regarding what the Watson Service APIs can do and I enjoyed working with my team-mates. I believe that Watson is a brilliant technology that can offer companies opportunities in service delivery that they may not have considered yet.”

The team worked intensely over the two days, starting from nothing to delivering a fully working prototype, supported by a comprehensive presentation.

The idea and prototype was “highly commended” from the IBM judges.

HAYNE Solutions are working with IBM to learn more about the possibilities which Watson offers to businesses in terms of future planning, reducing risk and opportunities for growth.
